Sporthalle Seefeld, Zürich

The Seefeld school complex is located in the Mühlebach district, a densely built area with urban character. The plot is listed in the inventory of sites of historical interest. The Seefeld school building, dating back to 1853, holds a high cultural heritage value.
The space program is contained in a compact structure that complements the surrounding buildings and opens up a generous and accessible outdoor space for school activities and neighborhood activities. The new structure is subordinate to the listed school building, which retains its prominent position, and to the outdoor space, which characterizes the neighborhood and the street landscape with its trees. The existing tree inventory is valorized and connected to the open spaces of the school center and the neighborhood. The open spaces are arranged in continuity with each other and with the structure of the neighborhood, creating a unified and continuous space between Seefeldstrasse and Wildbachstrasse that promotes the permeability and accessibility of the area.
The entrances to the new building respond to a heterogeneous program whose functions are intended to function both independently and in synergy. An open and permeable ground floor is in direct contact with the outdoor spaces and reinforces the openness of the new building towards the neighborhood.
Expression, proportions, and the placement of the new building correspond to the urban character of the neighborhood and are in dialogue with the existing school building. The structure of the new building is based on the characteristics and scale of the Seefeld school building.
The construction system consists of simple, modular elements with a high degree of repetition. The parts of the construction system are clearly separated from each other. The primary load-bearing system represents an open, neutral infrastructure that can accommodate functions that mutate over time.
The access concept and the arrangement of the learning programs are adapted to the requirements of heterogeneous uses. The classrooms for school use and the conservatory classrooms are accessible through the open space shared between the two school buildings. Public functions are located on the ground floor, while teaching and work functions are located on the upper floor. The access system allows the two floors to be used separately. A separate service block contains access to sports facilities, which can operate independently.
