Transformation and extension Pinacoteca Züst, Rancate

The project focuses on the transformation, expansion and refurbishment of the rooms of the Züst Art Gallery in Rancate. The existing structure is included in the list of cultural heritage of local and regional interest.
The programme includes the implementation of new content, the re-qualification of existing features, the improvement of the functionality and accessibility of the museum spaces and the adaptation of the thermo-climatic systems to current requirements. In parallel, it is planned to build a new underground car park with 50 spaces. At the same time, the project involves the redevelopment of the village of Rancate, which is listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Settlements of National Importance (ISOS).
The project is based on a comprehensive investigation of the architectural features of the village centre of Rancate and a rigorous analysis of Tita Carloni's original intervention. The new intervention involves the integral conservation of the existing structure, adapted to current needs with only the most essential interventions. The former parish house maintains its original character. The new intervention continues the existing structure, completing the architectural ensemble at the corner of Via Pinacoteca Züst.
The extension of the Pinacoteca is in volumetric and typological continuity with the existing volumetric complex. The new building is defined by a simple volume, with an open pitch to the north to allow in natural light, and a measured face towards the park to the south.
The existing staircase, characteristic of Carloni's intervention and in keeping with the typology of Rancate's built environment, is maintained and enhanced in its role as pivot of internal circulation. The height of the new exhibition space is set at the level of the park and is served by the landing of the existing staircase. In this way, the narrative of circulation is continued in spaces of different proportions and characteristics, alternating between different spatialities.
The parking project is designed to minimise the volume of the excavation, provide natural ventilation and smoke extraction, offer a clear and simple organisation of paths and accesses, and allow optimal use of the new park located above the underground car park.
The new extension volume is conceived to create a public space in line with the scale of Rancate. The inclination of the volume slopes towards the park, providing a covered space and seating for the users of the public garden. The new park is accessible from different directions. In particular, towards the street is a new staircase that serves as both public space and access. The connection with the museum complex is facilitated by the new walkway level with the access level of Piazza Santo Stefano
